The beach would not be complete without a meal at our favorite place. This July we brought our 7 year old granddaughter with us and she was treated like a princess and loved the food and dessert which she saved room for. Always a pleasure! Bob and Cheryl Fidler Wmspt,Pennsylvania

Don't let me rating deter you. Here's the sitch: It's old school. Perfect lighting. Comfortably decorated. You would almost expect a serenade. The waitress is a Long Island expat which my in-laws could barely understand. The food/wine is immensely afforable. And it is good. It is not great. But it is good. So it's one of those back hip restaurants you do on vacation to keep the budget sane and still have a good time.

WARNING: The chef/owner is very HOT tempered and if you complain about the food, he may THROW YOU OUT of the restaurant and call you a WACK JOB. This is exactly what happened to us. Seriously. We were in town for the weekend for our anniversary, and should have taken the time read the reviews on how AWFUL the food was. We ordered the smoked tomato soup, but sent it back because all you could taste was pure smoke flavor. Tried the spinach salad with hot bacon dressing instead and didn't complain, but it was really bad. There was NO bacon in the dressing, and it came with a carafe of hot chicken stock with vinegar and onions in it. I'm not a chef, and even I can make a delicious hot bacon dressing from any simple recipe off food network. The entrée I ordered was supposed to be fresh mahi mahi with a banana sauce over a pecan rice pilaf. Ok, first, I know what a rice pilaf is and second, I have a pretty good idea of what banana sauce is. But instead, the fish came out with a fried coating that had mushy bananas in it that was so greasy, I thought it had been deep fried. When I touched it, my fingers were bright with grease It wassitting in a spicy sweet and sour sauce with red food coloring (like you get in Chinese restaurants) with bits of canned pineapple and some coconut in it. Also soaking in this strange sauce was a glop of white goo which was supposed to be the rice pilaf. It was overcooked and had no pecans, or onions, or seasoning, it was totally flavorless. Nor was there literally any flavor to the fish or the nasty fried coating with the mushy bananas when I tasted it, which I was really hesitant to do just based on its appearance. I was so confused when the dish came out I immediately protested before the waitress even left the table, showing her right away that the rice had no pecans and questioning the fried coating on the "fresh" fish and the weird sauce. She took it to the kitchen and came back with it right away saying that the chef had said he would box it up for me, but would not removed it from the bill. I laughed. "I'm not paying for that." I stated flatly. "Its awful." So off she went. The next thing we knew, the chef/owner came to the table with the dish and began yelling at us saying that we had already sent the soup back, and that there was nothing wrong with the main dish!! As I was correctly pointing out the problems with the various elements of the dish, he literally GRABBED both my plate as well as my husband's dinner and screamed "GET OUT!." We got up immediately and as we were leaving, I was sipping the last of my soda water when he came back into the room, grabbed the glass out of my hand, and yelled accusing me of trying to steal the glass calling me a wacko or wack job or something juvenile like that. In a word, AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Besides the crazy chef/owner, the restaurant is too dark, the tables have white cloths but the menu is a plastic laminated type of thing you'd see in a diner.)

Still a family favorite after all of these years, we stop in every time we come to the beach. The DBF and I stopped in for dinner last week, and we both enjoyed the stuffed lobster tail with mashed potatoes and the chef's vegetables. We were able to make it during HH prices, so it only cost $17.50 ($4 more if not HH). It is not a huge plate of food (it is only a 4 oz. tail) but it is the perfect size for me and I was full for the rest of the night. The DBF thought it made a great light meal and said he would definitely order it again, and he is not even a fan of lobster. It is a convenient stop and a pleasant little place. Service is always upbeat, friendly and efficient. I will be back in two weeks while in town Christmas shopping with my mom (she loves it here too)!

We went to Just in Thyme as a group from work. As far as the atmosphere, it is quaint, and not pretentious. The group was well cared for from wait staff. I had the opportunity to sample the Mussels Marinara appetizer. It was very good. The mussels were tender, had been cleaned properly, no sign of grit. The marinara sauce was mild and complimented the mussels flavor without overwhelming it. I had the veal masala as my entrée. The veal was not as tender as I expected, that is to say, it was not tough, just not that buttery tenderness I have had with veal in the past. The sauce was again, mild, but not too mild, which was again a good compliment to the veal. The mushrooms were small, button mushrooms, The vegetables on the side were disappointing .I would guess they were frozen, and were overcooked. The rice was plain, but served to soak up the remaining sauce. They have no draft beer, but make up for it with a good selection of bottled. They do have a full bar and drink specials. Two of my colleagues had the watermelon margarita special and both commented on it being good. The prices are a bit on the high side, but overall the restaurant is worthwhile.

So we saw the "boat" advertisement while we were sitting on the beach today, offering steak and seafood dinners for $13.95 during the Early Bird hours of 5-6:30. We arrived around 6:00, and we were seated right away (the place was empty). We ordered a bottle of wine when our server greeted us, and heard the specials, and waited 15 minutes, and we still did not have any wine, water, ice tea for the kids, etc... And there was NO $13.95 steak dinner - just beef stroganaff tips in a sour cream sauce for $13.95. We guess they just wanted to do the "bait and switch" tactic and get people in under false pretenses and then dish out something different at the same price. After waiting for so long without any water, bread, or wine, we left. We are Rehoboth Beach locals, and we will never try that place again.

I have always been skeptical of this place but decided to try it for the first time last weekend after passing by it for 18 years on the way into Dewey. The inside is very cozy especially since it was xmas time. We just went for the happy hour. Started off with an eggnog martini which was eggnog, captain morgan and khalua. It was delicious. We shared the fried mac and cheese from the happy hour list. It was nicely fried and still creamy inside. Sometimes it can be hard inside. The garlic shrimp were delicious. Just wish we could have had a little bread to lap it up. Also shared the pulled pork sliders which were average. My mom liked the homemade slaw. Said it had a differnt taste. We were also informed by the bartender that everything is made there from scratch. All of the staff were really nice and we will return for dinner.

We got carry-out while on vacation. We ordered the coconut shrimp, Caesar salad, a crab cake dinner with potatoes and crab dip. Everything was delicious. We picked up our food at the bar. The dining room was quiet and the decor was kind of old-fashioned. Definitely charming. They put our order in a food lion shopping bag lol but who cares because the food was bangin' :)

I can't review the food because after waiting over 15 minutes, no one came to take our order. As a mom with two kids we may not have fit their target demographic. When I asked the hostess to get the server because we had been waiting to place our order she put up her finger (thankfully not THAT one) and so we just got up and left. As we have a house just down the street we've been wanting to try it but it's now officially off the list.

It's just not very good. The decor was nice and the service was fine, but the food was about 50% pretty good and 50% barely edible. First, I'm a vegetarian, and there isn't one single thing on the menu without meat except for a basic tossed salad. I asked if I could have the asparagus that came with one of the specials, but they refused. They offered me instead a "vegetable medley" of califlower, zuccini and squash in butter and salt. Yuck. I passed and had the tossed salad for dinner and a couple of bread rolls. The salad was actually pretty good, as tossed salads go. My mother also had a salad - something with avacado and brie, and she liked it. There was some fried shrimp that was just OK, and my husband had tuna that was nearly inedible (and he'll eat almost anything). My mother tasted it and agreed it was awful. It even looked strange - sort of a strange color, and very limp and lifeless looking. Hard to explain, but bad. My son had chicken nuggets - kids menu - and chocolate milk. Chocolate milk also tasted awful and he didn't drink it. Not sure how you can screw up chocolate milk. He didn't love the nuggets and fries, either; not that he's a foodie or anything. All in all, I would not return. A few things were good, a few things were horrible.

We stopped in on a Sunday night and they had a good amount of people in the restaurant. They have some great Happy Hour dishes every night from 5-630 that are good and reasonably priced around 13 to 15 dollars. Although everything else seems a bit pricey they have alot of specials and were doing 5 bucks off the dinner entrees. Its weird that they discount the menu though they should just make those the standard prices. I had the Soft Shell crabs which were ok but the scallops and veal pasta dish was awesome. Service was great and all in all a decent place although a bit overpriced.

Stopped here for happy hour and then dinner. Bartender is very friendly and the drink was great. Dinner was delicious. I was there on a Tuesday evening when they had a great special on crabcakes. Some people have complained about the ambiance of this place, but I found it comfortable and relaxing. Lighting is dim, but not ridiculously so as at least one other reviewer suggested. There is maybe an older crowd here and I certainly fit in with that group, but I think anyone would enjoy this place.

For the past 15 years, since my parents first retired to Rehoboth Beach, my family and I have been regulars at Just in Thyme. In all those years and all those meals I can never once say our meal was bad, the service was bad, nor did the owner come out and act psychotic. The portions there, even in the summer when others cut back, are ample and dollar for dollar one of the better buys when it comes to restaurants. Its nice to know that the three people who really bashed Just in Thyme will never come back. In fact tonight we are going there for dinner!!!!!

I love the ambiance of this place. We were sat at a table right by the fire. Very cozy & romantic. The lighting was a little low but bearable. We had heard from friends that this was the place to go for delicious desserts. They were right! They promptly brought out the dessert tray. I had the tiramisu & my friend had the peanut & chocolate cake. Both were heavenly! I'm looking forward to going back during happy hour & having dinner.

Happy Anniversary Dear! Ooops! Okay, so somehow we chose Just In Thyme for our anniversary dinner during a romantic beach getaway. I can't recall exactly how, but we didn't do our homework (i.e., checking Yelp and other foodie critiques) and we ended up paying for it. Have you ever been berated by a "chef"/owner and had your plates pulled from your table? No? Neither have I! Please read on! Being very close to downtown Rehoboth and with an ambiance which appeared to be quaint enough (it was the weekend before Memorial Day so it wasn't crazy yet), we weren't too put off by the fact that the place was a bit empty, actually quite pleased. We were initially shown to a table in the middle of everyone else already seated and asked for a table just a little not so dead-center. The waitress was kind enough to show us to another two-top off the side. The menu appeared to have a number of fine choices and I was torn between a pasta dish and some fish. Upon the hostess/waitress' recommendation, I went for the Steak au poivre special. My wife elected the Mahi-Mahi Hawaiian special (you may have read her review already or it's next in line after mine). The very basic dinner roll basket *hint #1) came along with our soup appetizers as we were finishing up sharing our anniversary cards and gifts. I had the bisque and she had a "smoked" tomato soup. Now, please allow me to share that my wife can cook. One of my favorites of her's is a roasted tomato soup where she oven cooks and/or grilled the tomatoes (I usually have to peel the skins off for her), she purees the whole tomatoes, does a bunch of fancy things and makes this awesome tomato soup which is to die for. In addition, before I had her good cooking, I had also spent 16 years in the military so I also know how preparing a meal can be rushed. In those years, I spent some time in Alaska where we could bring our fresh caught salmon into a local cannery and have it canned for us. It was in that process that I learned all about "liquid smoke." Back to Just In Thyme. Well, the smoked tomato soup of my wife's was clearly made just in time...with liquid smoke. There's no escaping that I know EXACTLY what that little bottle delivers and that's how the "chef" made this "special." So much so, that's all you could taste. Even for my relatively non-discriminating taste, I couldn't handle it. My bisque, however, wasn't bad. Good pieces of lobster, well-temperatured, well-served. We sent her soup back and she ordered the spinach salad as a replacement. It came, was very well-portioned, but a quite a bit light on egg and bacon. Overall, still an okay experience so far (in my opinion). Our entrees arrived and appeared very well portioned. Under the au poivre sauce, I had a decent sense that I was going to actually have a nice piece of steak. My wife's Mahi-Mahi, however, appeared "listless," kinda "draped over" a mound of rice. Upon closer inspection, she estimated that the fish was fried in something doughy (enough to not agree with her) and wasn't encrusted as described and we were faced with another likely return. Upon further inspection, the rice was also not found as described as having pecans (or so we thought). We waved a server over and kindly explained our disappointment and asked for a menu. In a NY minute, a short, middle-aged, round man (evidently the "chef"/owner, but not wearing any cap of any sort - pointed out simply because we watch Food Network a lot) comes storming to our table and demands to know what the heck the problem is! The fish is still on the table so my wife tries to explain her impression that the fish appears fried - he counters with an alternative - she then tries to explain that that the rice is not as described, with pecans - he counters that it was piquant, not pecans - oh, okay so the server's accent is now somehow our problem. We both finish sharing how the red, pineapple sweet and sour sauce (apparently from a jar) was not at all what we were expecting.... READY? Here it comes..... The gent actually grabs BOTH our dishes off the table and tells us to GET OUT! Let's take a second here and think about how much further his actions could have gone if he had simply said something like, "Ma'am, what is it you are looking for and maybe I can help guide you to something on our menu." Instead, we pick up our things, head for the door, my wife finishing her club soda with lime. As we approach the server stand where she's to leave her glass, he grabs the glass and claims that she's trying to steal it and called her a "wacko." This guy is not firing on all cylinders and it's clear that it's likely going to be a long summer for he and his crew. Assault is out of the question, and so is eating here.

Great as always. Dined here on 7-29-12 with my parents. Service was very good and the food-soup fresh...my steak was done to perfection along with everyone else. We always enjoy JiT and unfortunately do not eat here enough. Nice added perk-that the server did not mention was that we had early-bird pricing and was a nice added surprise... Thank you and go enjoy the Carpet-Bagger Steak!

Just In Thyme was the only dining disaster during out week of vacation in Rehoboth Beach. It hadn't been Yelped, so we ventured into the unknown when we decided to eat there. The name suggests a innovative menu highlighting fresh local produce and herbs. Umm.... FALSE advertising!!! What we got was stale menu with poorly executed traditional American "fine" dining at its worst. *Strike one... the interior is stuck in the 80's. It's stuffy, ridiculously dim, with white cloth tables jammed too close together and pretentious water goblets... completely uninspired. *Strike two... the staff is snooty. Get over yourselves. When you've got something to be snooty about, feel free. In the meantime, get a damn grip! *Strike three... the parking lot is a fecking nightmare. If you've got a deathwish, this place is a good place to start. *Strike four... inflated prices AND small portions. I'm okay with small portions when it's haute cuisine prepared by a trained chef, but this was obviously NOT the case. *Strike five... the overpriced meals included NO salad, no choice of sides, no soup. WTH is with that? No salad or soup??? Bizarre. Again, if this was haute cuisine, I might understand. *Strike six... umm... they have a kids meal, sure... but it has fucking LOBSTER on it. Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME??? Ya think you could swing a damn grilled cheese Just In Thyme??? *Strike seven... I would have been willing to forgive strikes one through six if the food had been amazing. But not only was the food not amazing, it was bad to awful, depending on which plate you were eating off of. I ended up eating my daughter's tortelloni because my meal was so bad. The tortelloni was the only thing on the table that passed as good, but that might have been because it was swimming in a half cup of butter. But let's discuss my dinner, shall we??? I ordered the vegetarian platter because this is a steak and seafood place and I eat neither. The platter consisted of lackluster spinach pie, paired with the MOST DISGUSTING, soggy sweet potato in puff pastry I could not eat. It was soooooooooooooooo bad. And to top it off, it was served with this weirdly spicy zucchini (which is one of my favorite veggies) over top of tiny portion of awful spicy pasta. It was the most bizarre pairings of food I've ever had in my life. Who the hell puts puff pastry on a plate with something wet like pasta sauce? And unless it's fra diablo, pasta sauce isn't supposed to be spicy. I think the spiciness was just to mask flavorless sauce that completely LACKED any fresh herbs. Basically, they served me a plate of garbage for TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS. Remember, it was a small plate of poorly prepared vegetable dishes with NO SOUP and NO SALAD. NEGATIVE ONE MILLION STARS for being bar none on of the worst dining experiences of my life. Worse than the time I found a piece of brillo in my breakfast at the diner, which I still ate because at least it tasted good. Everyone at my table agreed the food was subpar and overpriced. DO NOT EAT at Just In Thyme, you'd get a better meal at McDonald's. At least they have salads.
